Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease.  It can be painful and disabling, leading to loss of functioning and mobility.  Its exact cause is unknown, but the hydroxyl radical has been suggested to be involved in its development. Since molecular hydrogen has been demonstrated to be a selective scavenger for the hydroxyl radical, this study tested whether hydrogen rich water could complement conventional therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. 

The Experiment:
  • Twenty patients with RA (ages 40 to 86) drank 18 onces of water containing a high concentration of hydrogen every day for four weeks.  
  • The next four weeks, they did not drink any hydrogen rich water.  Then they repeated a second four week course of drinking the same amount of hydrogen rich water daily.  
  • Doctors used two tests to determine the severity of their rheumatoid arthritis, once before the study, and again at the end of each four week period.  

The Results:
  • Testing for 8-OHdG (8-hydroxydeooxyguanine, an indicator of oxidative damage to DNA) in the patients' urine showed that drinking hydrogen rich water significantly reduced the amount of this biomarker.  
  • The doctors also used a test called the DAS28, which is a common assessment of RA disease activity and response to treatment. 
  •  At the end of the study, 16 of the 20 patients showed significant improvement in their DAS28 scores, the other four did not experience improvement in symptoms.  
  • Nine of the patients achieved a score low enough to be considered "remission" and four of those reported being symptom-free at the end of the study.

Type 2 diabetes (adult-onset diabetes) is a disease in which there are high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. It is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, either the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells ignore the insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy.

Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) is the condition of having blood glucose levels that are higher than normal, but below the level of a person with diabetes. It is a pre-diabetic state.

The Experiment:

  • Scientists tested the effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water in 30 human patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus and 6 with IGT. 
  • The patients drank about 4 cups of hydrogen-rich water each day for 8 weeks, or a placebo of pure water. 

The Results: 

  • They found that several biomarkers of diabetes (properties of blood and urine that indicate the presence or severity of diabetes) were improved by drinking hydrogen-rich water.
  • In 4 of the 6 patients with IGT, drinking hydrogen-rich water changed the results of the medical test for IGT back to normal. 

The Conclusion: 

The scientists conclude that drinking hydrogen-rich water may have a beneficial role in preventing Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance.

Very loud sounds over a long period of time can cause "noise-induced hearing loss."  

The Experiment: 
  • Scientists gave guinea pigs hydrogen rich water or normal water for 14 days, then exposed them to very loud noise for 3 hours.  
  • The animals' hearing was tested before and after the exposure, and periodically for two weeks afterward.  

The Result & Conclusion:
Their findings suggest that drinking hydrogen rich water can facilitate the recovery of hair cell function in the inner ear and reduce noise-induced temporary hearing loss.

Parkinson's disease is a neurological syndrome which causes the degeneration and death of brain cells.

The Experiment: 

  • Rats were injected with 6-hydroxydopamine, a drug that is toxic only to specific ("nigrostriatal") brain cells.  
  • This induced Parkinson's disease in the rats. 
  • Scientists gave these rats hydrogen rich water.

The Results: 

  • The rats' behaviours were analyzed.
  • It was found that the hydrogen rich water "prevented both the development and progression of the nigrostrital degeneration."  

The Conclusion: 

"Our studies suggest that hydrogen water is likely able to retard the development and progression of Parkinson's disease."

Cancer patients receiving radiation therapy often experience fatigue and impaired quality of life.  

The Experiment: 
  • Scientists gave hydrogen-rich water to human patients who were receiving radiation therapy for liver tumors.  
  • The patients drank 1.5 to 2 liters of hydrogen-rich water each day for 6 weeks.  
  • Another group of patients also receiving radiation therapy for liver tumors were given regular water to drink (this is called a placebo).  

The Results:
  • Hydrogen water improved the quality of life of patients receiving radiotherapy
  • Hydrogen water mitigated oxidative stress marker during radiotherapy
  • Hydrogen water did not compromise the radiation treatment efficacies
  • Hydrogen treatment did not alter liver function or blood composition during radiotherapy

Doctors from the Program in Sports Medicine at the University of Tsukuba in Ibaraki, Japan noted that athletes take antioxidant supplements to mitigate muscle fatigue caused by oxidative stress during acute exercise.  They suggested that hydrogen-rich water might be an appropriate hydration fluid for athletes to provide hydrogen as an antioxidant. 

The Experiment:
  • They tested this hypothesis on 10 male soccer players, 19 to 22 years old.  
  • The players drank hydrogen rich water or placebo water before exercising (a half liter the night before, and one liter the morning of doing exercise tests.)  
  • Blood samples were collected before, during and after a strenuous course of cycling and running.  
  • The blood samples were tested for blood lactate levels.  
  • Lactate is produced by the body during intense exercise and is considered to be one of the major causes of fatigue during exercise and muscle soreness after exercise.  
  • Muscle fatigue was measured by attaching electrodes to a muscle in the thigh (the rectus femoris) to produce an electromyogram (EMG).  

The Results:
Athletes who drank hydrogen rich water had lower blood lactate levels and less muscle fatigue compared to athletes who drank regular (placebo) water.  

The Conclusion: 
The authors of this study concluded, "Although further studies are absolutely warranted, drinking HW [hydrogen water] would be a novel and effective fluid hydration strategy for athletes."
